Hargreaves Lansdown started in Bristol in 1981. Peter Hargreaves and Stephen Lansdown built it into the largest direct to consumer investment platform in the UK. In March 2025, a group led by CVC Capital Partners, Nordic Capital, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority took the company private and removed it from the London Stock Exchange.
The platform mainly sells shares, funds, ISAs, and pensions such as the SIPP. It does not offer leveraged forex or CFD trading. There is no fixed minimum deposit, though regular investing needs at least 25 pounds a month or a 100 pound lump sum. A platform fee applies, moving from 0.45 percent to 0.35 percent from March 2026, capped inside an ISA.
Hargreaves Lansdown mostly serves people who live in the UK. If you move abroad, you usually cannot open a new account or add fresh money to an old one. The FCA has also warned about scam clone firms using the Hargreaves Lansdown name, so always check you are on the real hl.co.uk site first.
