Pros
- No fixed minimum deposit is needed to open and fund a DEGIRO account
- Trading fees are low and shown as a clear fixed cost per trade
- Access to stock exchanges across Europe, the US, and Asia from one account
- Backed by a real licensed bank supervised by BaFin, AFM, and DNB
- Over 3 million client accounts across Europe as of 2024
Cons
- AFM fined DEGIRO or its parent bank in 2020, 2022, and again in 2025
- BaFin placed a special commissioner at the bank from 2023 to 2024 over risk gaps
- A Dutch dispute board ruled DEGIRO misled a client about its order routing
- UK clients get no FCA authorization or FSCS protection today
- Built for cash stocks, ETFs, and options, not leveraged forex or CFD trading
DEGIRO started in the Netherlands in 2008 and opened to retail investors in 2013. It grew into one of Europe's largest low cost brokers. German group Flatex bought DEGIRO in 2019. In 2021 DEGIRO's Dutch company merged into flatexDEGIRO Bank, so DEGIRO is now a brand and branch of a German bank.
DEGIRO focuses on stocks, ETFs, bonds, and options, not classic leveraged forex trading. There is no fixed minimum deposit, just a small test transfer to prove your bank account. Fees are a flat cost per trade, not a spread. The lead regulator is Germany's BaFin, with the Dutch AFM and DNB also supervising the Amsterdam branch.
The record is not spotless. AFM fined DEGIRO or its parent bank in 2020, 2022, and 2025 over governance gaps and wrong transaction reports. In 2023 BaFin placed a special commissioner at the bank over risk and money laundering gaps, ending only in September 2024. A Dutch dispute board ruled DEGIRO misled a client about order routing, and UK clients get no FCA cover.
