DRW Holdings set up Cumberland in 2014 to trade cryptocurrencies, building on more than three decades of trading experience at its Chicago parent. Cumberland now runs a 24 hour OTC liquidity desk for institutions, with offices in Chicago, London, Singapore, Toronto, Montreal, and Greenwich.
Cumberland only serves institutional counterparties, not retail traders. Clients trade by phone or through Marea, its screen based electronic platform, or by API. Goldman Sachs and Nomura have both publicly credited Cumberland with providing liquidity for their first crypto trades.
In October 2024 the SEC charged Cumberland with acting as an unregistered dealer in more than $2 billion of crypto assets it treated as securities, including Solana and Polygon. The SEC agreed to dismiss that case in March 2025. Cumberland separately holds a New York BitLicense, UK FCA cryptoasset registration, and licenses in the BVI and Cayman Islands.
