Topstep is a Chicago futures prop trading firm founded in 2012 by former futures trader Michael Patak, who still owns the business. The National Futures Association lists its brokerage arm, Topstep Brokerage LLC, as an approved introducing broker under ID 0567079.
Most traders join through the Trading Combine, an evaluation that costs a monthly fee rather than a normal deposit. In 2026 Topstep also registered a second entity, Topstep Advisory LLC, as a Commodity Trading Advisor and Swap Firm. This came within two weeks of a lawsuit from trader Vincent McCrudden, who argues Topstep runs an unregistered commodity pool.
Topstep says it has paid over $1.4 billion to funded traders across more than 140 countries. Traders who pass an evaluation can keep up to 90 percent of profits, and Topstep now also offers a separate live brokerage option for people who want to trade their own capital instead of an evaluation account.
