Pros
- Long standing brand in retail forex, founded back in 1999
- Was a public company on the NYSE for a full decade
- Its FOREX.com and City Index brands continue to operate today
- Now backed by StoneX Group, a much larger financial services firm
Cons
- GAIN Capital no longer exists as an independent, standalone broker
- US unit was fined 700,000 dollars by the NFA for compliance violations
- Researching this name alone will not show current, live account terms
- Its brands changed ownership, which can confuse long time clients
GAIN Capital was a retail forex broker founded in 1999 in Bedminster, New Jersey. It listed on the NYSE under the ticker GCAP in 2010 and grew into a group built around two brands, FOREX.com and City Index.
StoneX Group, then still named INTL FCStone, agreed to buy GAIN Capital for about 236 million dollars in cash and completed the deal on 31 July 2020. GAIN Capital Holdings, Inc. stopped trading on the NYSE and became a wholly owned StoneX subsidiary. The NFA had fined its US unit, GAIN Capital Group LLC, 700,000 dollars for compliance violations before the sale.
There is no separate GAIN Capital broker to sign up with today. Its retail trading business now runs under StoneX Financial Inc, mainly through the FOREX.com brand, and City Index continues as a related StoneX brand outside the US. Anyone researching GAIN Capital should look at FOREX.com for the current, active version of this business.
