EFG Hermes Kenya Limited opened in Nairobi in 2017 as the Kenyan arm of EFG Holding, a financial group based in Cairo, Egypt. It holds a stockbroker license from the Capital Markets Authority of Kenya, number 105, and trades equities and bonds on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. In 2021 it launched the EFG Hermes ONE app to bring in retail investors.
That retail push did not last. In June 2025 the firm shut its retail brokerage unit, citing tough economic conditions that hit trading volumes. It told clients it would focus only on institutional business, and offered help moving retail accounts to other brokers. Before the shutdown, it was a strong performer, finishing 2024 as the top stockbroker by market share at 41.5 percent.
Today EFG Hermes Kenya still ranks among the busiest firms on the Nairobi exchange, but only for institutional and high net worth clients tied to the EFG Holding network. A retail trader cannot open a new account here now, whatever an older listing might say.
