CME Group traces back to 1898, when Chicago traders formed the Chicago Butter and Egg Board, later renamed the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. It went public on Nasdaq in 2002, merged with the Chicago Board of Trade in 2007, and added NYMEX and COMEX in 2008 to form the group as it stands today.
CME Group operates exchanges where members and clients trade futures and options on interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy, metals, and farm products. It does not open accounts for individual traders itself. Access always runs through a broker or clearing firm that holds membership at the exchange.
As a designated contract market, CME Group answers to the CFTC in the United States, and its shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker CME. That public listing means its finances are open to anyone, which is rare among the trading venues covered on this site.
